Syrphidae Sphaerophoria scripta??
nick smith
I've moved this from the general forum to see if I can 'hit' an expert as I was getting no replies.

Is there enough info in the photo to confirm or otherwise whether this is Syrphidae Sphaerophoria scripta (male), it is the nearest likeness I can find in the gallery photos.
(Why is everything I search for on the last few pages of the relevant album - this was page 22 and my previous request for volucella was page 25!!)

SE UK 02/08/2010. ~12mm, very slim looking
Cheers
Nick

The advice with Sphaerophoria was always that if the abdomen would be longer than the wings when folded over the back (like this one) then it is scripta but I'm not sure if the situation has changed - in mainland Europe they are almost certainly genitalia dissection jobs Smile

Thanks Chris, I'll spare it it's genitalia, but now having searched the forums and found similar posts I feel happy enough with the ID for my own use. (I hadn't realised Roger Thomason had already given positive ID when I transferred this post, I must learn to read more better!!)
