Hi, I was hoping someone might be able to help me to ID any of these dragons. I've had a quick try myself,using the net and my very limited knowledge. They were all found in West Sussex. 1.hav'nt a clue 2.common darter maybe 3.migrant hawker maybe Many thanks :-) |

As I understand it:- # 2 is probably a male Sympetrum sanguineum.(Ruddy Darter) # 1 is probably a female Sympetrum striolatumas (Common Darter)as the legs do not look all black.If the legs are all black then it would be a female Sympetrum sanguineum. #3 Look like a male aeshna mixta (Migrant Hawker) to me. 2. Legs colour uncertain, but this combination of brownish thorax with red base of wing is, I think, more vulgatum than sanguineum. Nikita Nikita Vikhrev - Zool Museum of Moscow University |

S. vulgatum is listed on the british Dragonfly Society website as a ' Rare vagrant to the British Isles '. The S. sanguineum has 'brownish thorax with red base of wing' see:- http://www.dragonflysoc.org.uk/frameset.htm?home&home Regards Gordon. |
