The attached was photographed in South East England on 10/09/06. It was sitting in the sun on an old sawn down tree. Close to it were small wasps laying eggs in small holes into the log. I formed the impression it was hunting these wasps but could as usual be entially wrong. I have attempted to Id it and thought it may be Laphria marginata. Regards Gordon |

If you want to check on names of flies in the British fauna, use http://www.dipter...search.php. Just type in the genus or species name, and you should get an answer. But remember that the ending can change, depending on the gender of the genus, so Laphria marginata has become Choerades marginatus. If you type in "marginat" the search facility will return both marginata and marginatus (as well as immarginatus).

Hey Tony I often consult Fauna Europea, but in this database the name is Choerades marginata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Asilus marginata Linnaeus, 1758. Why the difference between this two database, FE know too the gender of this genus ?? Louis |

Hi, There seems to be some confusion about the gender of Choerades. In several checklists the species names end on ...a, in a few other checklists the species names end on .....us. On Fauna Europaea most species names in the genus Choerades end on ..........a however there is also a species name ending on ...us (i.e. C. fortunatus). So that seems rather strange to me. But since I have no idea at all about the gender of Choerades, I don't know what is correct. Jan Willem |
