Visit was pretty interesting. Seen 6 or 7 species and caught at least 3 species (maybe 4). Of only one i am pretty certain. Neomochtherus flavipes female. Caught near St. Jean du Gard at about 400 m Size 22mm Also got a male of 20 mm. More pictures if needed. Am i right? Used key by Engel. I think of Neomochtherus pallipes, very numerous in the South of France |

This is a different species for it is much too big to be N. pallipes (11-15mm) This animal was 22mm as was the other female i collected, male is 20 mm. Added to that the colouring of the legs is very different from pallipes; the entire front of the femura is black pallipes has slight black markings on femura. I saw probably N. pallipes too but failed to collect one but do have a picture though. See part II

I used key by Seguy and again i end up with N. flavipes. So i'm pretty sure now. Still, confirmation would be nice.

I think that you are right. I looked at my two specimen, all right with the size and the anterieur tint of femura. The taxon is Aneomochtherus flavipes. Edited by christoophe on 28-10-2010 12:18 |

Thanks Christoophe. Aneomochtherus is new for me but it explains why i couldn't find N. flavipes at Fauna Europaea. Learning the hard way! : )
