Pupa in water
blowave
Hi!

This I found in the same dish as a mosquito pupa, around 8mm. Near Lincoln UK. 19th November.

Could this be Chironomidae?

it is chironomidae, but impossible to tell which genus or even which subfamily (for me). Most likely Chironomini, but if you can deliver me a photo of the abdomen (dorsally) and a detailed photo of the thoracic spiracles then a genus may be possible. Tip: submerge the pupa totally in water (but this makes it more mobile and therofore difficult to photograph).

Thank you atylotus, I should be able to find it again as it's in a small dish of water. It didn't appear to be moving at all when I found it.

I'm not sure where to find the thoracic spiracles.

I found it after a lot of searching! I tried to take photos of all angles of the thorax but they didn't work in the very dull weather even with a flash. I took a shot of the tail end instead.

I got a semi-dorsal shot of the abdomen..
