Asilidae spec. -> Machimus spec.
Josef Buecker
Hello Forum,
here are two pictures I took on July 20th 2010 in Hagen, NRW, Geermany, in the near of an extended beech forest, 150msm. Can the Asilidae spec. be determined?
Best regards, Josef

One of the important means to identify the fly is the chaetotaxy, or the arrangement of bristles on the animal. On your pictures important parts are not good visible. But another German familiar with the species in your area might have a clue just by the colouring of the legs for instance... In my area in the Netherlands i would think of M. arthriticus but for that species the colour of the bristles on back and legs is wrong.
Greetings,

Reinoud

For Northrine-Westfalia there are known three Machimus species in all: M. arthriticus, M. cyanopus and M. rusticus, as found on www.natur-in-nrw.de

I will give it a try Cool But when we mention Machimus we should also keep in mind similar genusses like Tolmerus and Neoepitriptus. The so called Machimus group. Could you give an indication of its size?

Here it is. For NRW there are:
Neoepitriptus setosulus
Tolmerus atricapillus
Tolmerus cingulatus
Tolmerus cowini
and the three Machimus spec. as mentionend.
Best regards, Josef
