White flying cotton
Gea
I found a fly (I assume its a fly) in my garden yesterday and I'm wondering what it is. It is about 3-4 mm long and it looks like it has pieces of white cotton all over its body and face (the pieces of cotton seem to be missing here and there). Its wings are transparent and its antenna are about half the length of its body.
Does anyone know what this can be? I can post a picture if needed.
Thanx in advance!

Sounds like a woolly aphid. You can see one here on http://www.giffbeaton.com/2004-06-07_0160_woolyaphid.jpg.

Thanx a lot for that fast response Paul!
It looks like it but yet also a bit different (this one has no ''cotton'' on its legs)
Here's a picture.

It could be Eriosoma lanigerum, the very common woolly apple aphid ([appel]bloedluis). Unfortunately, most images you will find are of colonies on trees and shrubs for which no alates (winged specimens) are shown,
