When I saw it, I thought Bombyliidae, but then others who without doubt understand more than I do have proposed Empididae. Photographed yesterday near Rome, about 4 mm long.

Rhamphomyia caesia (Empididae) female (or possibly geniculata), but there a few Italian species with which I'm not familiar - it might be one of them!

Nikita is quite right, this a species Empis, but I am not going to burn my fingers and at present will nit give any species name.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
