I mistook this initially for a hoverfly, because its hovering. Silly me! Can anyone confirm my second guess, Ophyra spec.?

In my experience, most hovering calypterates are Fannia, but this one looks to have a metallic colouration, so Ophyra may be more likely. The second fly is Lonchaeidae. (It has no suture across the thorax, so is an acalypterate.) Edited by Tony Irwin on 14-10-2006 16:32 Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |

Ophyra can also hover persistently, in my experience. Keep on a lookout, though, for the Syrphid Psilota (very rare !) is quite intermediate between the Ophyra and Lonchaeidae shown here. Theo Zeegers |
