Fly at tree wound, Arizona
Stephen
This fly was sheltering where the bark had been knocked off a living tree. There was no sap present. I didn't measure the size, but this wasn't a very big fly.

5 June 2011, Ramsey Canyon, Arizona, USA.

This is a Syrphid of the genus Myolepta. In the USA there are about four species within a subgenus, with scale like setae. On bugguide.net there is one picture of a species from this subgenus, possibly the same species.

You visited Ramsey Canyon (Huachuca Mtns.) in the nick of time Stephen! Sadly, it may now be all burnt-up...

I sure hope not, though the news has been sobering! They closed the canyon the day I left, or rather the upper part. Such a special place, during a drought in an arid area, I was watching diving beetles and giant water bugs in the creek!
