Pipiza? Cheilosia? or other -> Paragus haemorrhous/tibialis
brigitteu
Hi

very small hoverfly, about 5-6 mm, dark, hairy eyes, wings mostly open, it seems with reddisch spot on abdomen . .
Switzerland, 23.09.2011, 430 msm, near Lake Zurich, near gardens and brook, on a blade of grass

Is an ID possible?

Thanks a lot, kind regards, Brigitte

Hi Brigitteu

With this face I would have said Paragus haemorrhous but I'm not sure.

Hi Pierre-Yves

no wonder I'm confused about this fly :-) Paragus, never thought of this one. Thanks you for ID!

We do have 12 Paragus on Checklist for Switzerland. So it will stay Paragus sp.?
A frontal view of face would help?

Kind regards and thanks, Brigitte

Hi Brigitteu,

It's espcially the profile view of the head than lead me to Paragus haemorrhous, but I have never seen this specie in my region. You can stay with Paragus sp. but may be someone will confirm the specie name. Wink

Hi Pierre-Yves

sooner or later I'll try to show my pics in a homepage, the ID's will be public. So I'm very happy about each ID which goes to species, it will be much more interesting for homepage visitors too. But if species isn't not enough sure I prefere to stay with c.f. or sp. in public.

It would be very welcome if you could give me your help for the level of ID :-) species, c.f., sp. because my english is not well enough to "feel" the small differences between. I'm sorry about.

Thanks a lot for ID!
Greetings from Switzerland, Brigitte

This is Paragus haemorrhous/tibialis. One of both. If you have a good view on the sternites, we can make a nice ID. Otherwise not.

Hi André

"If you have a good view on the sternites", that's a ventral view, isn't it? The little Paragas was not as cooperative :-)
- not collected, I know . . .

Paragus haemorrhous/tibialis is already a nice ID! Thanks a lot for confirmation and specification!
I'm happy about, kind regards, Brigitte

Thanks a lot Andre !

What documentation do you use to identify Paragus species ? I have some difficuties to find a good key of the North-West species (French species in particular) !

Thanks a lot again !
