This is a well known Tabanus from southeast Asia, but I don't know it by heart.
Need to look it up.
At the moment, I don't have time,
I will report next week.

Thanks

It is very like this one http://www.dipter...#post_6652 that I took just inside the tropical zone in central northern Australia. Similar size and markings, but impossible to tell from my photo if they are same unfortunately. I await Theo's response on yours with interest.

Hi Nikita

I'm back.
It is a female Tabanus somewhere near T. striatus.
However, there are many of these in Thailand and I'm not an oriental expert, so T. striatus group is what I can do.

And to Susan:

Yours is similar at first glance. However, the frontal stripe seems much broader and the thoracic pattern is very different, so absolutely a different species.'
It might even not be Tabanus, some Pseudotabanus (Chrysopsinae) are very similar ! (what's in a name)

Many thanks Theo - I wasn't sure whether the differences were real or just a product of my poor quality photo. It would have been nice to put a name to it, since it got familiar enough to bite me, but always useful to know what something is not as well. I don't know Pseudotabanus at all, but it wouldn't surprise me if that is what it is - Australia seems to be full of Pseudo-this and Para-that.
