Bulldog Face
Stephen
Ephydridae? My notes say that in Ephydridae the face often bulges forward.

I took this photo and only after taking it did I discover this fly was dead, sitting on a root of the Sugar Maple tree where, perhaps, it had been feeding.

Is that perhaps a moth fly up near where the wing meets the thorax?

Hi Stephen,

I would say Pollenia (Calli-horidae),
given the golden hairs on thorax and head profile.

The "moth fly" is actually the alula (the basal posterior lobe of the wing, excluding the calyptera) inclined up at an angle.
