Ephydridae, Scatella sp.?
Martin Suvak
Hello,
please, could someone help me to identify this species?

length 2,5 mm
Slovakia, in heated greenhouses

I tried to determine it but I have no special literature for Ephydridae. At the moment, it seems to me it can be Scatella.
Could be another view more helpful?

Thanks in advance.

Martin

Hi Martin - This is Scatella tenuicosta. In Europe only this species is known from greenhouses, except for a few sites in Britain where the Nearctic Scatella obscura has become established. So far I have had no records of obscura from continental Europe and no records of stagnalis from any greenhouses anywhere. I am in the process of writing up this work, but like so many things it takes longer than I'd like! Sad

Thank you very much Tony! There are several permanent dipteran inhabitants in the greenhouses of Kosice Botanical Garden, Slovakia. They are from various families (Muscidae, Ephydridae, Psychodidae, Sciaridae, Chironomidae and Dolichopodidae). Do you know about some literature sources dealing with such greenhouse species?

Martin - I can really only comment on Ephydridae. As far as I know, there have been no special publications dealing with greenhouse species, except for problems with Scatella species (which are known to be involved with disease transmission in salad crops). I have recorded other ephydrids from greenhouses, notably Limnellia quadrata, but it appears that most records (apart from Scatella) are accidental visitors. Scatella breed in the algal mats that form on soil and irrigation matting when crops are regularly sprayed with water. There is a possibility that some Scatophila species may also breed in heated greenhouses (old paper by Bolwig on S. unicornis) but I have no personal experience of this. I am very happy to look at any photos or specimens of ephydrids from greenhouses from anywhere in the world! Cool

Thanks a lot, Igor and Tony!
Medetera is one of common flies sitting on various surfaces in greenhouses in Kosice. I will try to get some of the mentioned titles (though I am afraid of problems with Italian text).
Scatella is less obvious, I have seen it mainly as a prey of Coenosia flies. Your information is really helpful for me.

Hi Martin!
Please check this paper:
V?NNINEN, I. 2001. Biology of the shore fly Scatella stagnalis in rockwool under greenhouse conditions. Entomologia experimentalis et applicata 98, 3/2001: 317-328.
All the best,
Igor

Thank you Igor for another hint! This work seems to be also useful for me.
