Simosyrphus aegyptius, Zambia
Will van Niekerk
Several months ago, it seems that I thought that this fly bore some resemblance to Asarkina, and filed it accordingly. I'm rather less convinced now, but in the absence of any more promising leads, I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Hopefully - and, based on previous response times, almost undoubtedly - someone on here will be able to give me a more convincing ID for it.

Place: Chongwe district, Lusaka Province, Zambia
Habitat: Ornamental garden/orchards (Could possibly be perched atop an avocado, I can't actually recall).
Date: 24/10/2011

Size: 10-12mm

Thanks - I didn't think it would go beyond genus with only the head in focus, so I've been pleasantly surprised!

Changing title and heading to the gallery to see whether it's worth adding the image.

Just to check, is it S. aegyptius or S. aegypticus?

(EDIT for clarity - because both come up on searches, and I am assuming that they are homonyms, which is current?)

Hmm, the name is probably Simosyrphus aegyptius, according to Fauna europaea.

Thanks again.

Image has been submitted for gallery.

(Note for admin, really sorry, had oversize file on first attempt to submit for gallery, failed to select family on second attempt with corrected file-size, so has been submitted to Acartophthalmidae instead of Syrphidae).
