3-4 mm
Ben Hamers
Good evening,

Here are some flies of the last weeks, all near Heerlen. The only thing I dare to say about them, is that their size was about 3-4 mm.

The first one is a member of the family Clusiidae.
Second one Ulidiidae (Otitidae)/Tephritidae ????
Third and fourth are probably Lauxaniidae.

I will try give a more detailed (or corrected) reply later.

Dear Ben,

I don't know about the others, but the second one is a Herina, family Ulidiidae, formerly Otitidae. I'll have to look into the species though.

Best wishes,

John

Hi Ben,

The first one is a member of the genus Clusiodes (Clusiidae). To identify it to species level you should have a more detailed picture of the head, where the bristles (vertical and orbital bristles) can be seen properly.
Clusiids breed in dead wood, larvae and pupae often being common under bark and in relatively soft wood.

Hello John and JeeWee,

Thanks to you both for your support.
Clusiidae is a surprise. To be honest, I never heard of a family Clusiidae.
I am not proud about the Ulidiidae - fly, I should have known that.
