Face to face ? fly vs. spider
Martin Suvak
Hello,

Please, can comeone help me to identify this fly (or even spider)?

Size: cca 2.5 mm?
Habitat: light forest with oaks, cherries and black locusts
Slovakia, Kosice, 300 m a s.l., July 2005

Spider prey is probably Formica sanguinea. The fly seems to be very impertinent, it feeds literally from spider mouth, Smile.

The situation is also here:

Thanks for any ideas.

The fly is a chloropid of the genus Tricimba. I have seen such behaviour in Desmometopa of the Milichiidae, but never in Chloropidae.

Thaks a lot Paul!
I have also seen various flies in the vicinity of spiders with prey but this situation was very strange for me. In my photos there is probably also Desmometopa sp. on a honeybee attacked by the wasp Vespula germanica - I will sent it later.

Desmometopa are very 'fond' of honeybee preys of spiders, robberflies and reduviid bugs.

Thank you Paul for additional information. I am sending a Desmometopa (as I guess) in next thread.

Hello!

Because nobody mentioned the spider: it's a crab spider (Thomisiidae) of genus Xysticus.
Best regards,
Jürgen
