Another winterly Calliphora?
Juergen Peters
Hello!

This one was very small for Calliphora, not bigger than a house fly. But it had orange cheeks, so C. vicina? Found yesterday night at our house (Ostwestfalen/Germany). Not visible on the photos, but at some angle the abdomen seemed more greenish than blue.

Hi J?rgen
Your photos show the pale basicosta well, so I think this is certainly vicina. As with all carrion-feeding species, the amount of larval food determines the size of the adult, so there is a wide range of sizes in Calliphora. Rognes give the length of vicina as 5 to 12 mm.

Thanks! It already came into my mind that the small size could be the result of larval foot shortage. But I never saw such a small Calliphora (and never such a late one).
Best regards,
Jürgen
