France Tachinidae Lecanipa
sd
France, Dordogne. Mixed woodland/meadow on limestone.
7th June 2012. Size 8mm. (ref#84)
I think this is Lecanipa leucomelas
- only a few hairs on vein R4+5, not reaching r-m

Some great photos there Steve - I can't really comment because they are all too rare for me to have experience of them but I am sure Theo or Erikas will be along soon Smile

It does look like Lecanipa, but the eyes seem bare (?are they).
In which case it can't be Lecanipa.

There are hairs but sparse, should be able to see some on this cropped image.

OK, that is very sparse but long, so there must have been more.

It is Lecanipa and not bicincta, so leucomelas should be OK.
However, I cannnot see the small band of dust on tergite 5. Please check for yourself.

I agree with you the dusting on T5 is less than the key suggests - it is there, though better in hind view -I'll take another photo.
I have 3 specimens, all with the same reduced dusting on T5. But the other features, such as no hairs to r-m, key clearly to leucomelas.

2 extra photos to show hairy eyes and dusting on T5 when viewed ventrally.

I have never seen leucomelas, but should be OK.
