Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum.

Can anyone help me with the id of this fly?
It was photographed in Girona in Catalonia in June

Thx in advance

It is a female of Chloromyia formosa.

Thanks very much! In my guide only the male was depicted and it was quite different.

Cheers,

Especially the colour of the abdomen can by quite variable when looking at both sexes.

Tony Irwin on August 16 2006 - 13:06:09, As comment on the Photo when it was added to the Diptera Gallery:
This seems to have rather yellow hind tarsi, which makes it more likely to be Chloromyia speciosa. The wings also appear to be quite darkened which would fit with this ID.

Actually, I checked my key at the time (it was my identification) and that gave the colour of the mid and hind metatarsus for formosa as brownish and for speciosa as 'conspicuously yellowish'. I would call this brownish. Wing colour can be a bit tricky with some backgrounds. Yet a third character, the colour of the hairs above the antennae (black), speaks in favour of C. speciosa. Good catch, Tony.

I often have difficulty with "brownish" and "yellowish". Wink
So in this case, I checked my series of formosa . All of them had hind basitarsis the same colour as the dark (black, brownish) bit of the tibia. Some looked a bit pale from certain angles because of the pubescence, but in this photo, I think the yellow is ground colour rather than pubescence.
Anyway, an excellent photo of a very lovely fly! Cool
