Taken today on a conifer- pretty certain it's just laid the eggs at the base of the bud it's standing on. Body length 2.1mm- South Coast UK. Thanks Brian V.

This could well be Janetiella siskiyou, a North American gall midge that has spread to Europe wherever its hostplant, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana is planted. The pink larvae feed on developing seeds within the galled cone.

Thanks Tony for the ID  Interesting- I have seen some small parasitic wasps examiming this tree very closely a bit later in the year (last Year)- wonder if they are after the grubs ? Brian V. |
