 Dancing Fly - Genus?

Hello. I recently posted a photo on BugGuide.net of what has been narrowed down to being a Dancing Fly. It seemed we had narrowed it down even further to the Empis genus, however, after browsing here I am wondering if it may be a species of Hybos, such as Hybos femoratus. I don't have the photo here at work, but it can be viewed at http://bugguide.net/node/view/98297. I don't specialize in Diptera, so any help is much appreciated. Thanks. |

i think Hybotidae male. Perhaps Hybos sp. |

I cannot be entirely certain but it might be Rhamphomyia, despite the Hybis-like appearance (the thickened hind femora). The discal cell is clearly emitting three veins (only two in Hybotinae) and the anal cell is closed by a strongly recurrent vein (more stongly so than in Hybotidae). Hence Rhamphomyia, because vein R4+5 is not forked.

Thank you very much Paul. I did notice what you said about the anal cell. With the glare on the wings I wasn't sure if wing venation characteristics would be adequate. I really appreciate your help, and based on what you pointed out I feel safe with Rhamphomyia even though those swollen hind femurs had me scratching my head.  Your expertise is greatly appreciated. I'm going to move my image on the BugGuide site to the appropriate genus page. Would you like to comment on the image before I move it, notating what you told me here? Or I could quote what you stated here? Either way, thanks again for the help.J.D. Roberts |
