Attached picture: I think there are mybe some recognizable circle pattern on wing, smudged but something is there.

My guess would be, Noctuidae, Catocalinae.
The patterns you indicate could be mainly visible in UV light.

Can't help any further. It's a bit too far North for me. FYI if you go to the Catocalinae page on my website you will find many similar. "The Insects of Townsville".

Have a look at Heliothis nubigera.

Anyway I got tip it should be Helicoverpa armigera, Entered that and since I lost track a bit of things I belive this: http://agrozoo.ne...37988a2b9d is the exact catterpilar from which the upper coccon and adult followed.
The date 04.10.2012 fits by my memory --> last autumn.

The catterpilar was determined separately so I think Helicoverpa armigera might be right.

Yes, that does look more like it. It's certainly Heliothinae anyway.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
