Eutolmus sp. from Poland
jaho
It's been niggling me since last year, when I collected several specimens of this intriguing flies in northeastern Poland. All specimens length is 17-20 mm, genre Eutolmus, but what species? We have only one well known species in polish fauna, but that's not E. rufibarbis. Does anyone have any key which might be helpful?

Did you collect them in copula?

Not in copula, but these were the only flies sitting on the dirt road and when compared, all look as one species.

It seem to me that they are different species. Female is Eutolmus cf rufibarbis. Compare facial gibbosity on which the beard is placed. It is large with Eutolmus. The male however seems to have a rather small facial gibbosity (terminology: http://www.geller-grimm.de/morph/morph02.htm) I think the male is Philonicus albiceps. I can't judge the colour of legs. They seem dark brown but should be black. Maybe you know this key: http://www.robberflies.info/keyger/start.html

Yes, I know this key. I've been through several keys including the one you mentioned and of course I'm familiar with the terminology. I should have taken more photos of the facial gibbosity i guess. There are many Philonicus albiceps males in my collection and those specimens still look different for me but thank you anyway for your comment.

I agree. Especially the hypopygium looks strange. Couldn't think of anything else.
