ornage fly in rice for ID
chitrashanker
HI
I observed a number of these adults in rice fields at Kalimpong(Darjeeling) in INdia. The area is a hilly region at an elevation of 4000 ft. The crop is rainfed upland with no stagnating water. I have not observed this fly in other regions. Can somebody identify the species and give me some indication as to what could be its role in rice fields - pest or saprophagous?

Derbidae (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha)

Ascend, with all ease, perpendicular planes,
Rough or smooth, just as pleases me best.

In Distant, 1906 it runs to Diostrombus carnosa (Westwood, 1851) (as Drona carnosa, synonymy according to Muir, 1913)

Thank you Dmitry for the ID. Diostrombus carnosa seems to have a blackish abdomen while this is totally orange in colour. At least now I know what keys I have to refer Smile. Thanks a ton

At least the type species, Diostrombus politus Uhler, 1896, is recorded on rice (Lee & Kwon, 1977; Rahman et al., 2012)

Yes politus looks very similar (from Rahman et al., 2012); I believe it's not yet recorded from India though.

Really... what key characteristics I should look for to differentiate it from carnosa
