hi, the last photos from the series taken at Baile Herculane (Hercules Bath). small ~-4mm, swarming on Fomes fomentarius. and a very powerfull smell of fermentation. i think this are from Drosophilidae but maybe one more exact ID. cosmln EDIT: title changed Edited by cosmln on 09-05-2007 12:17 |

cosmin.. usually we can see drosophils hovering on rotten fruit (grapefruits, for example is great to find them). A good cup of wine is excellent to attract them.  The famous Oporto wine is great to call them. And myself too. Mushrooms, bracket fungi, rotting organic matter are great to attract them. Usually I found them in shadowy places. As you know Drosophilidae has a species that has a BIG importance on genetics. You know which species I'm refering.  I recommend for those who loves flies the reading of this book: Fly: An Experimental Life by Martin Brookes - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fly-Experimental-Life-Martin-Brookes/dp/0297645897/ref=sr_1_2/202-9513541-4592669?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189800490&sr=8-2 it is about some Drosophilidae flies, specially one. If you like a lot of Drosophilidae flies THE BEST place to see the biodiversity of them is in HAWAII. |
