This fly resembles Neria cibaria (gallery photos) a lot. Could it be that species? I photographed it this afternoon at Leerdam, Netherlands. It was about 8-10 mm long and was walking on leaves all the time. Thanks in advance for any help! http://slamenietd...web-log.nl |

I'd be happy with that identification. The general appearance is right for Neria and the ovipositor sheath typical of Neria. In N.cibaria there is a dorsolateral constriction of the ovipositor sheath as your picture illustrates. It's always worth sticking around and looking for a male; the genitalia are much easier to use for identification and there are frequently 2 or more species in the same location.
