Didysmachus picipes => Machimus sp
Susan R Walter
Am I OK with Didysmachus picipes for this female Asilinae? The ventral edge of the ovipositor seems straight. I can't see any strong bristles on the ventral side of the front femurs (ie I think I can eliminate Dysmachus fuscipennis). Do these pics give me enough to go on? It was photographed on 21 August 2014 on the rough grassy south-east facing slope of a limestone ridge in the Touraine Loire Valley, so the habitat fits for D. picipes I believe.

Hello Susan,

There is something lacking for Dysmachus....the bristles on the back of the mesonotum. In Dysmachus the whole back would be covered. Also Dysmachus picipes is an early species which emerges late april usually and flies till early juli. I think this one is Machimus species and there is a problem with the black legged ones in NW Europe (not just there actually). This could be M. cyanopus, caliginosus or setibarbus.
Greetings,

Reinoud
