Limnia sp?
J Roberts
Hello everyone. I photo'd this little beauty on the 17th of this month. It looks to me to be a member of Sciomyzidae. In my efforts to ID it, I've gone through several candidates that seem incredibly close but not perfect matches. It seems closest to being a Limnia species (Although there are some Elgiva that I have not seen photos for). In fact, it is a spot-on match for a Limnia unguicornis. The wing pattern and color keep ruling out candidate after candidate. The problem is that I don't know of that species being in my area, here in west Georgia, USA (or in eastern NA for that matter). So I'm hoping that you Paul, or anyone else, may be able to help ID this one. Take a look at the photo and see what you think (I resized the photos for the forum, so quality is degraded. I have the full size images ready if necessary). Thank you for any help you can offer.

Here is a dorsal view of the specimen.

Limnia is correct. I don't dare to guess which of Nearctic species it isSad

Thanks Nikita. I appreciate the confirmation on genus.

Can anyone else possibly narrow it down to species? Paul? Anyone? I still haven't found any info suggesting whether it could be a Limnia unguicornis in my area, and so far no other close matches. This is a tough one. I offer my sincere appreciation to anyone who can help with species level ID. Thanks.

It isn't Limnia unguicornis, Limnia unguicornis is Palearctic species.

Yeah, that's my understanding with unguicornis - Palearctic. I just kept wondering if it was an accidental import. Perhaps it's a subspecies. Limnia unguicornis var. severa was noted in California. It is recognized now however, simply as Limnia severa.

I'll just have to be patient and see if anyone can narrow this down to species. But I am indeed very pleased with at least having it down to genus level. Thanks again.
