Empididae - Clinoceridae - Clinocera stagnalis

Hi



* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 2007.05.
* size - 3-4 mm (small fly) wings almost 2x the body's size
* habitat - near river
* substrate - ??



EDIT ---> Title changed from "Mystery fly.. another" to "Empididae - Clinocera sp." and finally to "Empididae - Clinoceridae - Clinocera stagnalis"

empidid --- venation wing fits well, but strange.. long proboscis is absent. awkward
(perhaps broken, but it is unusual because all empidids I caught never broke their proboscis. awkward )

Long proboscis (really long that is) is really only found in Empidinae (in Europe). Other subfamilies have shorter probosces, those in Clinocerinae possibly the shortest.

There are a few exceptions in Clinocerinae, e.g. Hypenella, but they are not from Europe.

Clinocera sp.

This is Clinocera stagnalis.

It is holarctic in distribution, found in a variety of habitats and appears to have a wide temperature tollerance.
