Hi again, I found three of these larvae yesterday while planting sth under an alder. Are they identifiable (family or even genus..)? Thanks a lot! Lennart 2015-03-20, Germany, S-H, Mohrkirch, a few cm underground.. Length 18 mm. Edited by Lennart Bendixen on 21-03-2015 13:11 |

Bibionidae for sure, not sure about the genus. It could be either Bibio or Dilophus, but to be really sure you have to check the posterior spiracles (these 2 brown spots on top of the anal segment) if it has 2 or 3 openings. |

Penthetria has more pronounced abdominal filaments and prefers semi-aquatic/wet habitats, so the ground was merely too dry for this species. John has given you an ID about the genus......that is, if you can count  |
