Size 5.5 to 6 mm. Initially I thought it's a soldier fly (no result of quick search for the genus, though), but then remembered that I once posted a hover fly with shiny face and similar structures on it.

Orthonevra elegans. *Very* rare in most of Western Europe, classified as extinct here in Finland.

Oh, like that!... Many thanks Jere (and I'm proud I sifted Stratiomyidae). It was (and hopefully still is) a rather wet meadow in a clearing made for a power transmission line; a couple of years there was a lot of trees but they were all cut down, so there's already young growth; currently a lot of blooming Platanthera bifolia there. The railroad and M3 route (Moscow-Kiew) run nearby. A 15 minutes walk from my home. |

Key characters: the striped eyes! And a very elongated 3rd segment of antenna. Acording to the newly published book on Finnish syrphidae, this species has usually been found on spring meadows. Black, do you perhaps know if the area where you caught this fly has springs? During midsummer the water temperature should be a good clue, springs are cold ![]() Kahis |

I don't know about any springs there Jere, there are small brooks in the forest nearby and also some stagnant water sources. |

Just for the record: yesterday I found one more, on a meadow near a brook, Naro-Fominsk district, Ozhigovo station, ca. 55 km SW of Moscow. Size 6 mm. |
