Can’t see any hairs in the lower part of the eyes, so maybe Syrphus vitripennis or S. ribesii? As it looks like a male, I believe the color of the femur cannot be used to distinguish between these two. What does the jizz suggest? Location: Smrekovec, north Slovenia. Alt. approx.. 1500m. A bit higher magnification of the eyes would make the decision more safe (the hairs of S. torvus are very short). Given bare eyes, we have no chance to discriminate between S. vitripennis and S. ribesii. To cite our expert Dieter: "The colour of the femora is of no use to distinguish ribesii males from vitripennis. The crucial characters (microtrichia on cell bm, shape of probasisternum, setae on posterior mesocoxite) are usually not visible on fotos." Regards, Sundew |

If I enlarge the original photos it looks like there are no hairs. But the photos are not that sharp and if the hairs are really tiny, I can't be 100% sure. Hairs or not, as an unambiguous species id does seem not possible anyway, I'll stick to Syrphus sp. Thanks for your reply. Regards, David |
