Small Asilidae from Rhodes >Oligopogon hybotinus female, det. Eric Fisher
piros
Hi Forum!
I found this fly near Faliraki, Rhodes Island, on the date 22-06-2015. Its size is about 6-7 mm. It is a fairly non-descript Asilid, body mostly devoid of large setae, but, peculiarly, has sizable hairs on the last segment of arista (barely visible in the pictures). I would greatly appreciate any help in ID-ing it.
Thanks in advance!
Greetings,
Henrik

Wow; nice shots of an Oligopogon sp., female (peculiar antennae are diagnostic for this genus). Type sp., Oligopogon hybotinus Loew, was described from Rhodes; maybe this is it ! See Geller-Grimm & Hradsky, 2003 (Studia dipter. 10:165-179) for revision of Palaearctic Oligopogon.

Using the keys here:

http://www.geller-grimm.de/oligopogon.htm

it keys out at O. hybotinus, and features visible in the pictures match the description of the species in the same paper, so it must be this sp.
Thanks again, Eric! Smile
