A few days ago I posted a photograph that turned out to be Senotainia conica, most likely. This fly looks a bit similar, but also dissimilar enough to think it might not be Senotania. Also, my wasp book mentions the name Metopia for very similar flies... So my questions are: which one is this, what are distinguishing features, and is Metopia a synonim or a different genus? and here's another somewhat similar fly. All quite small, 4 - 6 mm or so. Sandy patch with digger wasps in flowery grassland. The Netherlands.

First one is a Sarcophagid, Mitogramminae - Liekele will be able to say which  .I think the second is an anthomyiid but it could be a muscid that I don't know. Note that vein M is straight, not bent. All the sarcophagids have a bent vein M. Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |
