This very large Syrphid (1.5-2 inches) today in N Wales, UK. Resting on the roof of a car, I have never seen anything take off so quickly!

Could it be a Volucella sp?

It's a male tabanid, not a syrphid.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
