Decidedly uncommon fly; I'm seeing around one per year, so far always January-March. Very much like the wasp Ammophila, which fits with Krober's description of male Physocephala in Africa, but I cannot find mention anywhere of a Conopid with its eyes so nearly meeting. So I'm confused. Resting on scrubby grass on a wet night in Chongwe, Lusaka, Zambia. Didn't tolerate the flash. 8th Feb 2016. Reminds me of Systropus, but I sometimes get those long-bodied Orthorrhapha confused. |

Stylogaster is the long genus of Conopidae, but I don't think antennae match here. |

That would explain a lot... I didn't even consider Bombyliidae. There seemed to be discrepancies in what I could see of the wing, too. Thanks, John. |
