Tabanus bovinus? July 05, 2007
Dmitry Gavryushin
Probably the biggest fly in our region - it's not a Gauromydas heros of course but 23 mm is certainly something for a fly.

The head.

Impressive. Does not seem to fit the description of bovinus in Chvala et al. The Horse Flies of Europe.
Key characters:
lower frontal callus [1] broadest at base ... [2] vs. [3] broadest at middle ..tinctus
[2] median abdominal triangles not reaching foregoing tergites sudeticus
- triangle usually reaching foregoing tergites . .bovinus

Note: bovinus - antennae black, basal 2 segments and sometimes segment 3 brownish at base;
sudeticus - antennae segment 3 reddish-brown on basal part including dorsal tooth, apically blackish brown, antennal flagellar segments black.

Thanks a lot Tony for your informative note.

Tony is quite right, this is sudeticus.
Be warned, however, that some female sudeticus looked remarkably like bovinus (see Stubbs in British Soldierflies and allies for this matter, or my key if you can read dutch). So Chvala cs. are a little careless. Neverless, bovinus is never like sudeticus, and since this picture suggests a typical sudeticus, that's what it is !

Many thanks Theo!
