Dysmachus ID
Luis Alvarez
Galicia (Spain), 24/04/2016.
It is the first Asilidae I've seen this year. I think it's a female Dysmachus. It looks like D. trigonus but I'm not sure. Thanks.
Regards,
Luis Álvarez

Maybe dasynotus... at least the D. cristatus, trigonus, dasynotus group....: )

Thanks Reinoud.
I have more photos. I can add some if you think you could help to ID.
Best regards,
Luis

This picture is great! extra pictures are welcome but will not clarify the identity. A good picture the front femur would nice for it seems to carry stout bristles on the underside. This would point at D. dasynotus, but the long bristles on the back of the mesonotum would point at D. cristatus, so.......The characters used in literature to separate the species are very variable in real life and it that makes it near to impossible to make a definitive id. Ik think this group of species needs a thorough revision to clarify the status of them. DNA analysis might help....; )))
