Lucilia/Phaenicia
chrysomya
Hi
I'm sure this has been explored alredy but I'm relatively new here. Is Lucilia or Phaenicia the currently accepted genus name for cuprina, sericata etc?

ThanksSmile

The majority of checklists (produced by people who really care about names) list Phaenicia as a junior synonym of Lucilia.
Use of Phaenicia appears to be restricted to applied entomologists who care less about what the correct, current name is (and judging from the images and captions on their websites, don't really care whether they have identified the genus correctly in the first place!) Angry

Thanks
I was a little surprised to be reading an applied book this afternoon and discovered they considered Lucilia a synonym and used Phaenicia in preference. I thought that recent studies indicated Phaenicia to be, at best, a subgenus of Lucilia. What to tell my students when the texts don't match the journals?!
