Gymnosoma
Isidro
Yesterday at Villanua, Huesca, Aragon, Spain. Pyrenees. About 900 meters high. Fir forest.

I know that Gymnosomas are very difficult, but I hope than someone can know it...

I doubt even Theo could give it a name - the photo is much too dark and lacking enough detail. Sad To have any chance of putting a name to a photo of a Gymnosoma (and notice I don't even say 'identify'Wink we would need to see the dusting on the frons and the thorax clearly - and even with a specimen (where you can check genitalia & individual hairs) you frequently get unidentifiable individuals.

ooooops, in all my osts, I put 9000 and I want said 900. Sorry, now I will edit all ones.

Oh, thats a pity. In this forum a long time ago, someone identify a Gymnosoma for me.... a G. rotundatum...

Thanks ;-)

Well, it depends on how sure you want to be of your "identification" Smile To me an "identification" is similar to a "determination" and it means the person giving the name has some experience with the group and has used a key on a specimen - or there is very little doubt as to the correctness of the name. But that is different to saying "it looks like..." or "it might be...", which is often all you can say with tachinid photos - and especially Gymnosoma sp.. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that the genus needs revision and the current keys yield way too many intermediate specimens. But it can be possible for an expert (read "Theo" Wink) to be pretty sure of getting the name correct in *some* cases - but still it would take very good, detailed photos of the right parts (eg. face & thorax). Smile

Well...
I tried take photos of the face, etc. But the photos was too blur. The only medium-quality picture that I made, was this one.

I prefair a sure identification, clear! But if it's not possible, an approximation is always welcome.

Thanks everybody Smile
