 Conops quadrifasciatus

Hi, here I am again! I have some pics of what I believe to be Conops quadrifasciatus, the first taken on 23rd July, the next 2 pics (of same fly) taken today, 8th August. I had thought the first fly was a male, the second has a large red blob between the eyes which are wide spread so I believe that to be a female. Please can someone confirm or otherwise, thanks! I'm not bothered so much whether they are male or female, but would like someone with more knowledge than me to confirm that they are actually Conops quadrifasciatus. To me that is what they look like, the red-brown legs and the stripes are more orange than yellow. Thanks!  |

I cannot see why it should not be Conops quadrifasciatus. Compare it to the nice pictures of the species given under http://www.syrphi...index.html. Best wishes, Sundew |

Thank you for your input Sundew, I too think there is no reason why it should not be Conops quadrifasciatus. I am however a novice at this, I am taking so many pics of flies in my garden and identifying them for a start looks relatively easy. That is until I find some that are so similar as to have a couple of hairs at different angles, it gets to be a little intimidating! They are indeed very nice pics on the link you posted. They are quite small flies in reality, to be able to get close and take pics at all is a miracle! I am hopefully getting a large MP camera, but at the moment these are what I have. I wondered if some were good enough for the gallery, some angles I have show different details, and if Paul gets better pics he can always turf them out assuming he would accept them in the first place!
