August 11, 2007, Ozhigovo station, Naro-Fominsk district, Moscow region. On the trunk of a fallen aspen. Size around 4 mm. All of my three shots in nature are combined. |

Many thanks Jan Willem - so maybe a Lauxaniidae then? There was a number of Peplomyza litura. The size might be a bit exaggerated (collected specimen is 3 mm).

But since Andrey Ozerov studied Russian Pallopteridae and has described several new species from Russia (for example Temnosira czurkini of which the wing markings look rather similar) he is much more qualified to try to name your specimen. OK let's wait for Andrey. The size is variable, yesterday I observed lots of these, some were around 3 mm, others 4 to 4.5 mm. It seems that they prefer small branches at the top of a fallen aspen (2 cm across or thinner). Peplomyza litura is also abundant but less easy to see, yet I didn't notice any egg-laying activities, just sitting. Found another Pallopteridae (pictures later). |
