Can somebody identify this one? It looks like E. tenax but the abdomen is very sharp-shaped and have withis rings in it. Last Sunday near Benasque, Huesca, Aragon, Spain. In medium Pyrenees about 1500 meters high. Habitat: border of a forest, above all of hazels and pines. In Sambucus ebulus leave. Size: 10-11 mm long (the same than E. tenax)  Thanks  |

Another guess, Eristalis lineata. Without a key to check you can only go on pictures, the tibia on the hind leg looks to have yellow as does E. pertinax, but it's the broader stripes which don't match. http://www.veluwe...talis.html http://popgen.uni...neata.html The dark veining on the wings might be a problem, can't really see it on yours. Thanks everybody... In the first link of Blowave I see the species identical for me  The E. pertinax is the most similar in the shape of the abdomen.... It's a pity that the wings are not clear, but this is the only picture that I have. Two votes for E. lineata.... |

Isidro, I am far from being an expert, I don't even have a key to the ID but I did see the key when it was available (it's now gone for some reason). I have quite a few different Eristalis which I am still trying to positively ID, I look at some of them and wonder if I have got it right! Having looked, and looked, and looked, after a while some things become apparent. E. pertinax has a very sharp tail end compared to others, although your fly looks narrow at the tail end it doesn't look quite as sharp as E. pertinax. The other obvious differences are the wider bands on the abdomen in E. lineata which seem to be a constant, and the well defined veining on the wing which seems to be a consistent feature although not obvious on your fly. Look at the pics of both on this site, I notice that E. pertinax is variable on the wing colour, some with more colour bleeding than others. It does have some banding on the abdomen but not as wide as E. lineata. http://www.syrphi...index.html This is a pic of one of my own which I think is E. pertinax. |

although the shape of the abdomen made me think of it, it isn't E. pertinax cause these have orange front tarsae. E. similis looks like E. pertinax with dark front tarsae a lot but has a clear long pterostigma (4-5 times as long as wide). Eristalis lineata should have obvious dark wing markings. maybe E. interrupta, this has a small pterostigma like in the pic, but it doesn't recall the interrupta jizz with me... let's wait for Gerard cause i'm not familiar with southern european Eristalis. |

Hello all, Well, indeed difficult. The other possibility would be Eristalis jugorum, which is not much different from lineata if you can't see it's face! If it's lineata, it normally has a pale femur 3 at base, which is just not visible here! But I think blowave and Jere are right with Eristalis lineata, because the wings (especially in the male) can be without dark markings! And tergite 2 seems to be completely dull, even on the yellow markings, which is a characteristic of lineata. Greetings, Greetings, Gerard Pennards |
