ID Syrphus ribesii?
Ocellar view
Found on 05 April 2017 in Switzerland, Kerzers (447 m)

I suppose Syrphus ribesii. Is this plausible?

I am afraid we can see not enough to be sure. I cannot guess whether the eyes are bare or hairy (if ribesii, they should be bare) and if the hind femora is prevalently yellow (the part we can see is yellow).

Hi,

isn't that decisive only for females?
Best regards,
Jürgen

Fortunately, I have collected the specimen and checked the following:

- Basal 2/3 - 3/4 of hind femora are black which seems to be typical for S. ribesii males
- Eyes are bare (rules out S. torvus)
- Second basal cell is completely and evenly covered with microtrichia (rules out S. vitripennis)

I think this should characterize it as S. ribesii. However due to a lack of trustworthy literature I am not quite sure.

Best,
Ov
