Nycteribiidae - Penicillidia sp. ?
jorgemotalmeida
Hi

* locality - Alviela (caves) - Alcanena (?) - PORTUGAL
* date - 2007.08.18
* size - 4 mm (small fly)
* habitat - cave
* substrate - calcareous rock

Yesterday I went to visit a cave in Alviela with my friend Andr? Van Eck and others persons. We saw many bats, and these flies: Phoridae, Chironomidae, Culicidae, Calliphoridae (the favourite for Meta/Metellina spiders in caves), Medetera spp. (many!), and.... finally the Nycteribiidae! Smile (sorry, cosmnlSmile

Here goes the photo I took. I hope that this photo can show us the possible genus!

EDIT---> Title changed from "Nycteribiidae! - bat fly. Smile" to "Nycteribiidae - Penicillidia sp." then "Nycteribiidae - Penicillidia sp. ?" (to confirm..)

Well, 4 mm. is a giant in the Nycteriibidae universe.

Again (see Roumanian specimen), I guess it might be Penicillidea.

Yes, it is a huge fly considering the family! Smile That?s why it was so easy to spot the fly. Smile

P. dufourii (Westwood, 1835)
P. pumilla Scott, 1914 (??)

Oh, I'm just guessing.

First let's fix the genus.
I think I use the monograph by Rothschild.
I'll come back to this

Whether there are ocelli and whether one ocellus has 1 or 2 (really !!) lenses ....

So we really need the specimens, I'm afraid, at least I do.
