Hi * locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL * date - 2007.08.16 * size - 8 mm (medium fly) * habitat - openland * substrate - on ground, near Quercus sp. I found this unusual bombyliid with bare and white gena, in the place of Cyrtus gibbus (Acroceridae). It calls my attention because the gena reflected the sun rays that it almost looked like a mirror.  It seems to be a mix of Cytherea with Vila EDIT---> Title changed from "Bombyliid with bare and white gena - Exhyalanthrax sp..." to "Bombyliidae - Heteralonia rivularis" Edited by jorgemotalmeida on 21-08-2007 11:27 |

i think this is Heteralonia rivularis (Mg.), there are some similar species that i have not seen and your specimen differs slightly in wing pattern from mine from Greece. |

is it not Exoprosopa (Cladodisca) rivularis? Was the species migrated from Exoprosopa to Heteralonia? I saw in a book that: Heteralonia Rondani, 1863 (Zygodipla Bezzi, 1924) This Rondani is not strange for me... where I heard about this author?? --- but we also can see that (undefined subgenus!) E ? ? P ? ? ? dispar (Loew, 1869) E ? ? P a ? ? rivularis (Meigen, 1820) (11) = argyrocephala (Macquart, 1840) That fits " ARGYROCEPHALA" means silver head (cephalothorax) meaning that gena is white and with silvery, so I think that Exoprosopa rivularis was changed to Heteralonia rivularis.. Thorax noir: quatre bandes plus p?les parIois peu visibles sous la longue pilosit? jaune, une tache d'?cailles blanches ? la'base des ailes. Scutellum brun. Pattes d'un brun noir. Balanciers jaun?tres. Ailes ? bordure costale brune; nervures bord?es de brun noir sur disque; apex largement hyalin ou vitreux. Abdomen : tergites avec des bandes ant?rieures d'?cailles blanches, m?lang?es d'?cailles brunes ou dor?es au bord apical. - L: 11-16 mm. description fits very well on this specimen.  and really wing venation fits 100%. That?s why I'm asking: Does Exoprosopa rivularis changed to Heteralonia rivularis?

" it is the same thing, looking at it a bit harder i see fauna europa uses Exoprosopa rivularis (Meigen). in Evenhuis and Greathead 1999 it is under "subgenerically unplaced species of Heteralonia". i think Fauna Europa superceeds Evenhuis and Greathead so best to follow that nomenclature, at least in this case. |
