I lost out on the argument regarding "Our tachinids are larger than you tachinids" see HERE but I can safely say that "Our Tabanids are larger than yours"; a mere 25mm for European Tabanus sudeticus:  see HERE vs. up to 30mm for North American Tabanus americanus.  This specimen (14 August 1991, North Carolina, USA) has a body length, dry, of 29mm excluding antennae. Eyes beautiful bright green in life. Looks like about 60mm in life when feeding on tree sap next to muscids. A slow day today, raining at last, so time to catch up on computer work. |

Yes, Tony, we know, you burgers are bigger, as are your horseflies: Tabanus americanus is really 30 mm., very impressive. I think, T. americanus is one of the biggest horseflies worldwide. Maybe the biggest. Theo |
