Tachinidae - Frontina laeta

* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 2007.08.25
* size - 8 mm (medium fly)
* habitat - open land
* substrate - on ground


It looks 100% gold. Smile One of the most beautiful colours I saw on a fly.

Frontina laeta, parasitoid of Sphingidae.

It fits very well. I saw 3-4 Sphingidae around. I found Macroglossum stellatarum.

Theo, the Frontina laeta that appears in gallery is not so golden.. are they variable in colour?

This is a female, in the gallery is a male.

That explains a lot.

Is it just the colour that enable us to distinguish between male/femle of Frontina laeta? It is a good way and quick to split them! Smile

The length of antennae is even bigger i male.

Moreover, in nearly all cases in Tachinidae females have 2 additional pairs of proclinate frontal setae, which males don't.
Any specimen with elongated claws is bound to be male.
