ID please, Efferia sp from Bonaire
Marc Bulte
Is it possible to get these to species? Found on the island of Bonaire, off the coast of Venezuela. The males were mostly in Mangrove trees and the one female i found was on some rocks on the ground. I have more photos when needed.

And the female

Efferia spp. Sorry Marc; this is best ID that can be made from photos of this huge genus.

1) Two spp. involved -- male is distinct from female; clear differences in height of hairs along scutum, color of hairs on scutellum, etc.; male has diff. shape to face (gibbosity bigger) and bristles near vertex too long...

2) Neither can be confirmed as very similar looking Efferia albibarbis (widest-spread of all Efferia spp) -- though female is closer to this sp., maybe deserves a "cf. E. albibarbis" as a name. Exact sequence & intensity of spots on abdomen and genitalia shape wrong for both sexes as E. alibarbis.

3) Wing venation must be clearly seen for ID's in this group.

Cheers,

Eric

Hi Eric, many thanks for your reply! I know what to focus on next time i see one of these now. I do have one shot which shows the wings of the female (same ind as in the second picture). The venation is not very clear but maybe you can make something out.

Thanks Marc -- helps with confirming not E. albibarbis (espec. by markings on scutum), but is in Albibarbis Group of Hine/Wilcox (same as Albibarbefferia).

Ok, thanks!
